Nibbles

Bitter & Twisted, Old Engine Oil and Schiehallion bottlesAs you’d expect from a company that has a mouse as its mascot – we love cheese nearly as much as we love beer.

Our favourite Cheesemonger, Mr Ian Mellis, has a plethora of wonderful cheeses for you to try and recommends the following with our beers: -

Bitter & Twisted is great with Brucklay - an ewes milk Gouda from Aberdeenshire with a little age on it.  The lemony hops on the finish of the beer go perfectly with Brucklay’s sweet, nutty flavours. Strathdon Blue from Tain is also good with it.

Schiehallion goes really well with Waterloo, an English mould-ripened cheese made from Jersey milk.  Both Schiehallion and Waterloo have slightly grassy flavours and the fruity acidity of the beer is yummy with the butteriness of the cheese.

It pains us to admit that Old Engine Oil is probably better with Christmas cake - (heavy, sweet and fruity) than it is with cheese.  Mild cheeses get overpowered; strong cheeses seem very salty. The best is a Crowdie from Connage dairy, which is organic and vegetarian. This cheese is sweet, and grassy with a texture close to a mascarpone.  It’s subtlety means that it does not struggle against such a big-flavoured beer.

Contrary to expectation, none of our beers taste that good with cheddar!  More delicate, grassy flavoured cheeses are a better match. There are over 650 cheeses in the world (see www.cheese.com) so you can have fun finding your own match for your favourite tipple.
